An empty ICU waiting room at night, lit by a single warm lamp

An independent short drama

Waiting Room

Some rooms hold the beginning of a love story. Some hold the end. This one holds both at the same time.

Logline

A young man desperate not to lose the woman he loves and an elderly husband preparing to say goodbye after fifty-five years meet by chance in an ICU waiting room — where they discover they are living opposite chapters of the same love story.

A young man sitting alone in a cold hospital corridor

Chapter one

Jayce, 26

Still bargaining. Still counting the hours. Still certain the door will open with good news behind it.

An elderly man holding an old photograph by lamplight

Chapter fifty-five

Jeff, 81

Done bargaining. He knows exactly how the night ends, and he came anyway — to sit with her one more time.

A young couple dancing in a sunlit kitchen, remembered in golden light

The story

One night, two lifetimes, one room.

Fluorescent light. Vinyl chairs. A vending machine that hums like it's keeping a secret. Jayce has been in the ICU waiting room for nine hours when Jeff sits down two seats away and offers him half a sandwich.

What begins as small talk becomes a night-long exchange of memory: first dances and last arguments, the vows people make at twenty-three and the ones they keep at seventy-eight. Jeff tells Jayce about a marriage that is ending. Jayce tells Jeff about a love that has barely begun. Slowly, the room stops being a place of dread and becomes a place where a life gets handed forward.

Waiting Room is a chamber drama about the arithmetic of love — how much time we think we're owed, and what we do with the time we actually get.
